When fighters ask me how to get more fights or get signed by a promotion, they often expect the answer to be purely about their skills. And while being a great fighter is essential, it’s not the only thing that matters. As someone who has spent 16 years competing on the Hungarian Karate National Team, became a world champion, and later moved into the promotional side of the fight business—including serving as the promoter of Dirty Boxing and the former President of Karate Combat—I’ve seen both sides of the game.
I know what it takes to make it as a fighter, but I also know what promoters actually look for when signing athletes. If you want to fight more often and get picked up by a major promotion, you need to do more than just train hard. Here are the three key things that will make you stand out.
1. Be Marketable – It’s Not Just About Fighting
Promotions aren’t just looking for great fighters; they’re looking for fighters who can sell tickets and generate interest. The reality is, this is a business. If you can’t bring eyes to the event, you’re a tough sell for any promotion.
Ask yourself:
Do fans care about your fights?
Are people talking about you online?
Do you have a story that people connect with?
The fighters who get signed and stay active are the ones who understand this. You need to make people want to watch you fight, not just because you’re skilled, but because you bring something unique—your personality, your style, or even your energy in and outside the cage.
2. Speak English – Communication Creates Opportunities
This might be an obvious, but speaking English gives you a major advantage in the fight game. Whether you’re from Hungary, Brazil, Japan, or anywhere else, the biggest opportunities in combat sports are international. And the dominant language in global MMA, boxing, and kickboxing promotions? English.
If you want:
✅Bigger fight contracts
✅More media attention
✅More sponsorship deals
Then you need to be able to communicate with fans and the media. Fighters who can give interviews, call out opponents, and hype up their fights in English automatically expand their marketability.
I’ve seen incredibly talented fighters struggle to get signed because they couldn’t express themselves outside of the fight itself. Learn the language, and you’ll open doors you didn’t even know existed.
3. Build Your Own Audience – Content is King
If you’re a fighter and you’re not posting content regularly, you’re falling behind.
The fighters who consistently share their journey, training, fight breakdowns, or even just their thoughts on the fight game create their own momentum. Promotions love this because it means you’re bringing attention to their events before they even have to spend a dollar on marketing you.
You don’t need to be a social media expert, but here’s what you should be doing:
Post behind-the-scenes footage – Show your training, weight cuts, fight prep, or even daily life.
Engage with fans – Respond to comments, post fight predictions, or give insights into your mindset.
Show personality – People want to connect with fighters, not just see knockouts.
I’ve personally seen fighters get signed or fast-tracked simply because they already had a strong fan base. The bigger your following, the more valuable you are to a promotion.
Final Thoughts: Fighters Need to Think Like Businessmen
Having spent my life in combat sports—from competing at the highest levels in karate to running a fight promotion—I know firsthand that the fight game is more than just fighting. It’s about making yourself an asset.
The fighters who get the best opportunities are the ones who:
✅ Are marketable and create interest
✅ Can communicate with the global audience
✅ Actively build their brand through content
If you’re a fighter who wants more fights, start treating yourself like a business. The talent is there—now it’s about making sure the world knows it.
